Query funnel

Plans Pro

The Query funnel card on the site’s Overview shows how your set of search queries is changing, in four boxes:

  • Gaining: New (queries that got impressions for the first time ever) and First clicks (queries that got their first-ever click; they may have had impressions before).
  • Losing: Stalled (queries that got clicks before and still show up, but got no clicks now) and Lost (queries that had impressions before and have none now).

Gaining and Losing are small row headers inside the card; on phones the four boxes stack in one column under them. Each box shows the count, the change from the window before (“was 12”), and a small trend of the last 12 windows. Click a box to see its queries (the top 200); click a query to filter the dashboard to it. A pin badge shows how many of your tracked queries are in the box.

Windows. Choose Rolling 28 days (default) or Calendar months.

  • Rolling 28 days compares the last 28 finalized days with the 28 days before, or, if you pick vs same 28 days last year, with the same 28 days a year earlier (364 days back, so weekdays line up). It updates every day. 28 days rather than 30 so each window has four of every weekday.
  • Calendar months compares the last full month with the month before.

Under the title, one short line names the two windows (“Sep 9 – Oct 6 vs Sep 10 – Oct 7, 2025”); the year is shown once unless the windows are in different years. Its “i” explains that the card ignores the date picker. The card ignores the dashboard’s date picker on purpose: fixed windows give a stable answer that doesn’t jump with weekday noise, and they’re quick to compute.

Verdict. A short headline above the boxes sums up the change, followed by four small chips: queries, clicks and CTR as signed percentages, and position in words (“Position 3.0 better” in green when the average position number went down, “Position 0.4 worse” in red when it went up, “Position steady” under 0.05). Hover the headline for the longer explanation.

  • “Visibility growing ahead of clicks”: queries up, clicks flat or up.
  • “Clicks down as positions slip”: clicks down, queries holding, average position worse by half a place or more. A link opens the pages losing clicks.
  • “Clicks down at steady positions”: clicks down, queries holding, CTR down (the tip says snippets or SERP features may be taking clicks).
  • “Losing visibility”: queries fell first (by 10% or more, more than clicks). A link opens Indexing.
  • Otherwise “No clear shift”.

Filters. The search type and the query, brand, topic cluster and tracked filters apply (“Tracked queries” narrows the funnel to them). Country and device filters don’t: Google doesn’t report queries by country or device in this data. Page and content-group filters don’t apply either. Anonymized searches aren’t in query data, so counts are a floor. These notes are in the “i” next to the card title, not printed under the card.
