Opportunities

Plans Pro

The Opportunities tab turns your Search Console data into four lists. Each one says in plain words how it picks rows, and every query or page opens its detail view when you click it. The lists follow the date range and comparison you chose at the top. Opportunities is part of Pro; on Free the tab explains what it offers and links to the plans.

Striking distance. Queries that rank at an average position of 4 to 20 and had at least 100 impressions in your range. They are close enough to page one that a better page could win real traffic. Potential clicks is the impressions times the click-through rate a position-3 result usually gets (11.0%), minus the clicks you already got. The biggest potential comes first.

Low CTR for position. Queries (or pages, switch at the top of the card) that rank in the top 10 with at least 200 impressions but earn less than half the click-through rate that position usually gets. A weak title, description or a crowded results page is often the reason. Missed clicks is the impressions times the expected CTR, minus your clicks.

Decaying pages. Pages that lost at least 2 clicks compared with the comparison period, with 100 or more impressions in either period. It is the same rule as the Decaying tab on Pages, so pages that disappeared are included. It needs a comparison; with comparison Off the card says so.

Cannibalisation. Queries with at least 200 impressions where two or more of your pages each get at least 20% of them. Google is switching between your own pages, which can hold both back. Each query lists its competing pages with their share of impressions, average position and clicks. This list always looks at the last 90 days (the span we keep for page and query pairs), and the card shows the exact dates.

How to read the expected CTR. The expected click-through rate by position comes from a published study of organic results (positions 1 to 10) and our own extension for positions 11 to 20. It is a yardstick, not a promise: results with images, ads or answer boxes earn less, and branded searches earn more.
